School Story

I graduated from the eighth grade from the last one-room school in the State of Kansas. Island Creek School of Piper, KS is now preserved at the Agricultural Hall of Fame near Kansas City, KS. My two younger sisters and I graduated from Island Creek School and Washington High School.

I graduated with honors as a member of the National Honor Society, a member of the A Capella Choir, German Club, Girls' Glee Club, and the Pep Club.

I attended St. John's Lutheran College, Winfield, KS, to be trained as a parish worker for the Lutheran Church -- Missouri Synod, which assigned me to Trinity Lutheran Church, Jackson, MI where I met James Byron Ewers. We were married a year later on June 29, 1968, and have now been married 56 years.

My husband, James, served with the Michigan State Police as a trooper, sergeant, detective sergeant, and uniform sergeant as the commanding officer of the Underwater Recovery Unit. Upon retiring from the M.S.P. he worked for U.S. Divers and started Professional Underwater Recovery with Glenn Sanford, a fellow M.S.P. officer to train police, fire, and other professional divers. He conducted the research for S.T.A.R. I and II, for the purpose of documenting data on the results of automobiles and school buses going into bodies of water. His projects have been shared around the world with many police and fire organizations as well as international dive teams, and was aired on the Discovery Channel. He has been an expert witness for lawsuits including the Edward Kennedy case and the Susan Smith case. He was also requested for his professional services in the recovery of the Valujet in the Florida Everglades. He has been a widely recognized expert on underwater recovery and has been a sought-after speaker at many civic organizations.
